Interpreting IRS Acknowledgement Report

The following information was provided during a discussion at a workshop on IRS E-filing for Tax Practitioner given in San Jose, Ca today September 5, 2008.

The following are some of the fields on the IRS Acknowledgements and what they mean:

  1. Refund: The amount of Refund on the return - parentheses () means an amount due
  2. Status: Accepted, Rejected or Exception
            Rejected means rework required
Exception means ERO used an indicator that it was an imperfect return
(remember that for Reject codes 501, 504 an 524 it is possible to resubmit)
  3. Sig Doc: SSP = Self Select Pin PP= Practitioner PIN
  4. Debt Ind: N,I,F,B
N or None indicates taxpayer will get full amount of accepted refund
I means something is owed to IRS
F means Financial Management System (one of the govt agencies who have a
claim on refund - an example is Child Support)
            B means both I and F
  5. SVC CTR: Service Center servicing the return; in California it is FRE for Fresno

In the printed 9325 generated, there is a code for Debt Indicator. Many Taxpayers have come back asking what the code, usually one of N, I, B, F, means. We now have an understanding of this code to explain to confused taxpayers.

Thanks to James Kinsey of the IRS for this illuminating presentation; the information was new to many tax practitioners.
