This is a new section on personal finance. The
purpose is to bring attention to aspects of financial information
that go beyond tax preparation by presenting publicly available
information in a form that is digestible by the layman. The problem
being addressed here is the large amount of information on various financial products, since there is overwhelming information
available on the web, and to reduce it into smaller amounts of
information that can be readily understood.
This section was inspired by several recent events.
-
The Retirement Savers Credit for taxpayers with incomes
below certain levels who put money in a retirement
account. Some
taxpayers were ecstatic over what it meant for them.
-
The slide show that ran continuously at
the VITA Milpitas Community Library for the education and entertainment
of taxpayers waiting their turn.
-
A request from Sachie Tanaka, Consumer Affairs Specialist,
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, who with the kind permission of
the Milpitas Community Library came to a VITA session to provide
educational material on identity theft, and
fraudulent activities by nefarious individuals who dishonestly want to
steal our hard earned money. Sachie also provided a slide deck of
FDIC developed financial education slides that joined the other slides in entertaining
and educating taxpayers.
-
Flyers provided by some VITA sites and the IRS
.
