Instructions for use of 8879 (PIN AUTH) within TaxWise

This year the 8453 Tax Form is only used to accompany additional information on paper to the IRS.  Electronic filing is either through the Practitioner PIN program or the Self-Select PIN program.

While still in your Tax Forms Defaults you can go to the Main Information form under the "Self-Select and Practitioner PIN" section where you will enter the five digit ERO PIN number. Mark the box below this to indicate that you are electing to use the Practitioner PIN. In the next section you can designate what form(s) you are filing using PINs in the Tax Form Defaults as "The income tax return".

When preparing a tax return both the taxpayer and the spouse will either need to choose to not authorize the preparer to enter the PIN and enter the five digit number themselves or they can authorize the preparer to enter the PIN for them. Once the PIN is entered it will carryover to the 8879 as will the spouse's if applicable and the ERO's PIN.

The Self-Select Pin method was a paperless filing method in 2006.  For the 2007 Tax Year it appears that copies of W-2 and 1099-R forms must be collected and kept.  Since the Self-Select Pin requires more information from the TaxPayer than the Practitioner Pin, and the paperwork to be kept is almost the same (less the 8879), the Practitioner Pin gives at least a hand signed signature authorization from the TaxPayer.
