The VITA site assignments are based on the VITA tests received and graded as indicated.  The list is updated as additional test results are received from volunteers, and is provided by the IRS VITA Coordinator for the San Jose Area.

On passing the test, you are certified to assist at a VITA site as tax preparer.  Other roles, such as greeter or interpreter, do not require certification.  If you would like to help in these and other ways, such as a greeter or interpreter, please let the IRS Coordinator know.

With Basic Certification, Volunteers can prepare 1040EZ/1040A and 540EZ/540A returns.  With Intermediate/Advanced Certifications, Volunteer can prepare all returns within specifications of the VITA program.

If Test Result is blank by your name, no test was received or a retest has to be completed.

If you completed the Basic Certification, you are strongly encouraged to take the Intermediate or Advanced Certification through link and learn by going to http://www.vita-volunteers.org to Tax Training.

The site assignment(s) are listed alphabetically by last name.  If you passed the test these are your assignments.   If there is a blank by your name, the assignment is tentative.  If there are any changes to be made, please let the IRS Coordinator  know as soon as possible.   The first couple of weeks, there may be shifting of volunteers from one site to another site.  The larger sites that could extra help include Campbell Library, Milpitas Library, Cathedral of Faith, and San Jose One Stop.

If you have your own laptop which runs Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it is possible to load the tax program on your laptop.  Please let the site coordinator of the e-file site know if you need this to be done ahead of time.  Trying to load the tax program just as taxpayers are showing up is not effective.

The coordinator of the assigned site will attempt to contact you by your email or telephone number of record.  It is important that you check your email, since most communication will be that way.  Please confirm as soon as possible that you will be at that site, and to receive any site specific instructions.   If you are unable to volunteer or do not receive any communication from the Site Coordinator or from the IRS, please let the IRS Coordinator know as soon as possible.   Those who have not made contact with the Site Coordinator will be presumed to be no longer interested in volunteering.

On the first day, make sure you arrive at least 20 minutes early to help with setting up the site.  Locate the box of forms and familiarize yourself with the site.  If you can, bring pens, calculators, stapler and other items that you feel may be helpful to assist you with preparing the returns.

Please identify yourself as VITA volunteers when you go to the site.  If your certification is not on this website, please provide a copy of your VITA certification to the Site Coordinator.
