Saturdays, 10am - 2pm February 2, 2006 - April 15, 2006 40 N. Milpitas Boulevard Milpitas, CA 95035 (408) 262-1171 T
The VITA Milpitas Community Library site is housed in the facilities of the Milpitas Community Library, a member library of the Santa Clara County Library system. It has helped low-income, elderly, disabled and limited English speaking taxpayers meet their civic duty in paying their share amount of income taxes and claiming the credits they are entitled to. Nobody remembers when it first started operating, but discussions with library staff indicates that it started in the early 1990s if not before. Up till 2002, returns were hand prepared. In 2003, two first-time volunteers, who are still at the site, began using TaxWise on personal laptops to prepare tax returns by computer. Subsequently more tax returns were prepared by computer, and in 2005 we went to E-file only returns. In 2005 we also used a Local Area Network (LAN) to support a Networked TaxWise installation. Mayor Jose (Joe) Esteves of the City of Milpitas visited the site to meet with the volunteers on April 9, 2005, the last day of the 2005 season (for 2004 returns). On behalf of the Milpitas City Council he presented Commendations to volunteers during the May 3, 2005 meeting where the Site Coordinator presented a report of 2005 activities. A video shows VITA's youngest volunteer helping Site Coordinator with required paperwork. This site does E-File and ITIN returns only. Paper returns are not prepared. The Library carries IRS and State of California tax forms for those who wish to fill it out themselves. The site is open Saturdays Feb 4, 2006 - April 15, 2006 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Many volunteers bring their own laptops. A limited number of IRS provided laptops with TaxWise are available for volunteers who prefer not to put the TaxWise software on their personal laptops. Mayor Jose (Joe) Esteves of the City of Milpitas visited the site again on March 4, 2006,
