The main season for providing services was over
on April 15. A few sites are still open for the rest of the year, most of
them running with trained volunteers who were on duty during the main season.
The last date for e-filing 2009 returns is October 15, 2010. After that,
2009 returns will need to be filed on paper.
Consequently, it is probably too late to
volunteer for the 2009 tax year season. Most sites are now going through
the process of shutting down for the season. This means counting up the
number of returns, finishing off the returns that are not complete, sending in
reports, returning borrowed equipment, recognizing volunteers, having wrap up
meetings to determine what worked and what did not, and take a break until the
next season.
Many taxpayers at this point are interested in volunteering
for the next season. Site coordinators have been fielding queries from
interested future volunteers. While they collect the phone numbers and
email addresses of potential volunteers, it is possible that in the chaos of the
moment these may be forgotten or overlooked and you may not be contacted in time
for next season.
Even if you volunteered this year, circumstances may change so
do not assume you will be contacted in time for the next season. Site
Coordinators may change roles, or move on to other responsibilities, and the
list of volunteers may not be transferred to the new site coordinator, or the
site coordinator may have a different way of training or selecting volunteers.
This website offers two options during this off-season period.
One is to sign up on the vita-information yahoo!group so that you can be kept
informed of when future training sessions are available. The other is to
fill in and submit the online signup form. That will send your personal
information to VITA Headquarters so they will be informed of your interest, but
note that even if they send your information to whoever could use your services,
your information may be lost among the other emails they receive at this time.
