The Internal Revenue Service selects
TaxWise
For 10,000 government-supported tax assistance sites
is the title of the press release by CCH, which provides
the TaxWise software. The press release notes that
VITA TCE and IRS Employees are provided TaxWise software
and the appropriate license codes.
TaxWise software can be ordered for VITA sites
through the relationship manager between October 15 and
January 31. The rest of the year the ordering
system is apparently shut down, so if you don't order
within that time period, it appears almost impossible to
obtain a copy of for your site, unless a copy of the
software issued to a different site is no longer using
it, and is transferred to your site.
It does appear that there is a requirement for
producing a minimum of 35 e-filed returns during the
filing season, and it appears that the relationship
manager is not happy when it appears that number will
not be met by the end of the filing season on April 15.
However, for paid preparation, it is possible to
purchase TaxWise at any time. In fact, once the main
filing season is past, on April 15, many of the tax
preparation software vendors are happy to provide full
versions of the software, which can be used for
preparing and e-filing returns at no charge until
the end of the season.
While CCH is the source of TaxWise licenses and
product codes, there are other vendors that sell TaxWise
under their own labels or under the TaxWise label.
Since such resellers may offer different value-added
services, the prices may differ, but many have early
bird specials that may offer deep discounts if ordered
right after the filing season.
