The VITA Milpitas Community Library site operates in the
facilities of the Milpitas Community Library, a member library of the Santa Clara County
Library system. In 2009, the library will be in a brand new modern
facility which is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. With a larger work
area, the site expects to serve many more taxpayers. The new site
will operate the name
VITA Milpitas Public
Library. Up till 2002, returns were hand prepared. In 2003, two
first-time volunteers used
TaxWise on
personal laptops to prepare returns by computer. Subsequently more tax returns were prepared by computer, and in 2005 it became
an
E-file only site. In 2005 we used a Local Area Network (LAN) to
support a Networked TaxWise installation.
Mayor Jose (Joe) Esteves of
the City of Milpitas
visited the site to meet volunteers on April 9, 2005, the last day of the 2005 season (for 2004 returns).
On behalf of the Milpitas City Council he presented
Commendations
to volunteers during the May 3, 2005 meeting where the Site Coordinator
presented a report of 2005
activities. A video shows VITA's
youngest volunteer helping Site Coordinator with required paperwork.
Mayor Jose (Joe) Esteves of the City of Milpitas visited the site
again on March 4, 2006 to view the operations, and visited the site again on Saturday
April 15, 2006 to thank the volunteers for their fine work right after
the close of business that day. On behalf of the Milpitas City
Council he presented Commendations to volunteers during the May 2, 2006
meeting where the Site Coordinator presented a report of 2006
activities, and also presented a commendation to the site that was
accepted on behalf of the site by the IRS Vita Coordinator.
This site prepares E-File and ITIN
returns only. Paper returns are otherwise not prepared. The Library carries IRS and State of California tax forms
for those who wish to fill it out themselves.
The site is tentatively scheduled to open Saturday Feb
7, 2009 - April
11, 2009 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Many volunteers bring their own laptops. A
limited number of IRS provided laptops with TaxWise are available for
volunteers who prefer not to put the TaxWise software on their personal
laptops. The April 2006 award of a HP Technology for Community
grant of wireless and mobile equipment has increased the capacity of the
site, and we encourage more volunteers to sign up for this site.
In particular, there is a need for volunteers with IT experience
familiar with laptops and networking equipment.
